Background of the Study

Digital education plays a crucial role in modernizing rural agricultural finance by enhancing digital literacy and empowering farmers to utilize online banking services effectively. Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) has implemented digital education initiatives aimed at equipping rural farmers with the skills necessary to navigate digital platforms, manage financial transactions, and access credit services. These initiatives include interactive workshops, online tutorials, and community training sessions that focus on practical applications of digital banking tools (Adekunle, 2023).

By improving digital literacy, GTBank seeks to bridge the gap between rural farmers and modern financial services, thus promoting financial inclusion and boosting agricultural productivity. The bank’s digital education programs are designed to address common barriers such as low baseline technical skills, mistrust of digital systems, and the limited availability of user-friendly digital interfaces. Through these efforts, farmers are better able to track their transactions, manage loan repayments, and make informed financial decisions. The integration of digital education into the bank’s overall strategy not only improves individual financial management but also contributes to the development of a more robust and responsive rural banking ecosystem (Olatunji, 2024).

Despite the potential benefits, the rollout of digital education programs faces challenges including limited access to digital devices, poor network connectivity, and varying levels of baseline education among rural populations. These obstacles can reduce the overall effectiveness of digital education initiatives, thereby limiting their impact on the uptake of digital financial services. This study aims to assess the role of digital education in enhancing rural agricultural finance at GTBank, evaluating its effectiveness and proposing strategies to improve its reach and impact (Ibrahim, 2025).

Statement of the Problem

Although GTBank has invested in digital education programs to promote financial inclusion in rural agriculture, many farmers continue to experience difficulties in adopting digital financial services. Low digital literacy remains a significant barrier, as many rural farmers lack the necessary skills to effectively use online banking platforms and mobile applications (Adekunle, 2023). In addition, infrastructural challenges such as intermittent internet connectivity and limited access to modern digital devices further restrict the reach of these educational initiatives. As a result, the intended benefits of improved digital literacy—such as increased loan uptake, better financial management, and enhanced customer satisfaction—are not fully realized (Olatunji, 2024).

Moreover, there is often a disconnect between the digital education provided and its practical application in everyday financial transactions. Without continuous follow-up support and practical training sessions, the gains from initial education efforts tend to diminish over time. This lack of sustained digital engagement contributes to a persistent digital divide that undermines the effectiveness of rural banking services. The study, therefore, seeks to identify the key challenges limiting the impact of digital education on rural agricultural finance and to propose strategies that can enhance digital literacy, ensuring that farmers can fully benefit from modern financial technologies (Ibrahim, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

• To evaluate the effectiveness of digital education initiatives in rural agricultural finance.

• To identify barriers that limit digital literacy among rural farmers.

• To recommend strategies for enhancing digital education and sustained engagement.

Research Questions

• How does digital education influence the adoption of digital banking services in rural areas?

• What are the main obstacles to effective digital literacy among rural farmers?

• What measures can improve the sustainability of digital education programs?

Research Hypotheses

• H1: Digital education significantly increases the adoption of online financial services among rural farmers.

• H2: Inadequate access to digital tools negatively affects the impact of digital education.

• H3: Continuous support and practical training improve digital literacy outcomes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on GTBank’s digital education initiatives in selected rural agricultural regions. Data are collected from program participation records, farmer surveys, and digital usage statistics. Limitations include regional variability in digital infrastructure and potential biases in self-reported data.

Definitions of Terms
